Fulham's double delight
 Women's Football News 1 Jun 2009

Fulham's double delight - 1 Jun 2009 - Women's Football NewsFulham Deaf completed a Cup 'double' on the same day as two late goals gave them a 4-2 victory over Kent Magpies Res in the Sue Sharples Memorial Trophy Final.

Having captured the Russell Cup earlier in the day, Fulham rested for three hours but showed no signs of fatigue early on and Camilla Willis should have given them the lead as she rounded Seema Kaler but shot wide of an open goal.

Magpies hit back with Courtney Hunt's cross finding Cat Ogori who broke into the area where she was denied by a good save from Natasha Ryan. That stop proved to be a very important one as Fulham shortly took the lead, Ana Andrade Gomez scoring with a swerving 25-yard free kick.

Two minutes later, they doubled their lead as Esther Maycock's pass put Willis through on goal and this time she produced a clincal finish to make it 2-0.

Magpies needed a quick reply and they got one just three minutes afterwards. EJ Cullis slid a pass into the path of Megan Storey, Fulham appeals for offside were in vain and the striker tucked her shot inside the post.

Maycock shot wide from a Willis pass but Magpies were enjoying a fine spell and they were back on level terms shortly before the interval, this time a good ball from Amy Stevens picking out Storey who gave Ryan no chance with an excellent finish for her second goal.

Magpies almost went in front in the first minute of the second half, Cullis cutting in from the right and finding Lisa Marie Bennett whose shot came back off the bar.

The lively Willis was a constant threat at the other end and it took a brilliant saving tackle from Keeley Clark to deny her as she raced clear on goal. Maycock then headed a Gomez free kick against the bar as Fulham began to get on top once again.

Maycock was just over from a free kick and Gomez headed a corner narrowly off target whilst Kaler did well to prevent an unmarked Maycock from scoring, blocking a shot with her legs after the midfielder had been picked out by a cross from Mandy Tobin.

However the pressure eventually told as Ashley Savage played the ball into the area where Clark, who otherwise did not put a foot wrong all match, underhit her back pass and Willis stole in to poke the ball home.

Magpies needed to push forward but Fulham, and Willis in particular, continued to look dangerous on the counter attack. The striker was heavily involved as her side scored a killer fourth goal with three minutes remaining, sliding the ball through and Kaler was unable to clear, leaving Savage with the task of slotting it home.
