![]() Fern Whelan looked to have given England a narrow victory over the might of Germany when she headed them in front on the quarter hour, but the visitors levelled the scores with just eight minutes remaining through substitute Marie Pollmann. The game was played in sweltering conditions with the temperature reaching somewhere around 30 degrees. Despite the heat, England started the match at a high tempo and dominated early on. Fern Whelan's headed goal from a corner after a quarter of an hour gave them a deserved lead. England held the lead until half time with relative ease as the Germans struggled to test their goal with any attempts of note. Indeed Carly Telford in goal barely had a save to make, with an easy catch from a long distance shot the closest Germany came. The tempo dropped in the second half, with the heat taking its toll on the players. The play remained even for the majority of the second half, with England still looking comfortable. A couple of half chances fell the way of the home side but they were not taken and Germany capitalised on a late opportunity to level. Going into the final 15 minutes, Germany began to pile on the pressure which finally resulted in Pollmann notching the equaliser late on. England under-23: Carly Telford, Dunia Susi, Claire Rafferty (sub Ellie Gilliatt 45mins), Kim Dixson, Fern Whelan, Sophie Bradley, Gemma Davison (sub Ellen White 62mins), Lizzie Edwards (sub Becky Hall 74mins), Natasha Dowie, Rachel Williams (sub Charlotte Young 67mins), Dannii Bird. Subs not used: Sophie Perry, Marie Hourihan, Mel Sutcliffe.
