The newly formed MK Dons Ladies FC played a friendly match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in front of several hundred supporters at the impressive stadiumMK, celebrating their links with the ambitious and progressive League One men's club whose name they bear. They will be competing in the South East Combination this season as the team has many players from the former Wellingborough Diamonds club who were strong contenders last season, allied to local talent from the existing Centre of Excellence. The Diamonds had beaten Spurs 10-2 in the league last season but this match was a much closer affair which provided good entertainment for early attenders before the men's team friendly. MK Dons attacked strongly throughout with forwards Aileen Whelan, Mikaela Welford and player manager Vicky Gallagher always dangerous, backed up by captain Caroline Moran's control of midfield. Chances came frequently, hindered only by poor shooting after fluent bulid up play. A very young Spurs side defended bravely, with left back Ryah Vyse and centre back Carly Williams very calm under pressure. However, it was goalkeeper Ebony Cabey-Gooden who stole the show with a classy display of great handling, topped off with a superb diving penalty save from Gallagher. Spurs were under severe pressure throughout the second half but kept trying to play constructive football which brought good chances for Charlotte Snow and Sasha Kelly after well thought out counter attacks. However, the introduction of Lauren Goodier for Dons Ladies increased the threat and a right wing cross on 79 minutes was met with a fine header by Aileen Whelan for the winning goal which the home team deserved. The final whistle brought prolonged applause from the crowd for an entertaining match. MK Dons Ladies will normally play home matches at Newport Pagnell FC and have two more friendlies before the Combination season starts at Lewes on August 16th.
