Fleet sail to Cup Final victory
 Women's Football News 16 Apr 2010

Fleet Town captured the Hampshire League Junior Cup with a 2-0 victory over Andover New Street Res in the Final at Gosport Borough FC.

This was the first ever final in the Junior Cup which was open to teams in Divisions Three and Four of the Hampshire County Women's League and promised to be an exciting game with Andover New Street Res topping Division Three and Fleet Town heading Division Four.

Early pressure by Andover resulted in Laura Humphreys having the first meaningful attempt on goal after six minutes of play. Andover continued to make the early running and thought they might have scored after ten minutes but for some brilliant defending by the Fleet defenders who managed to clear the ball off the line.

Humphreys continued to cause the Fleet defence problems and in the 25th minute had a close range shot well save by the Fleet keeper.

Fleet always look dangerous on the counter attack, especially through Joanne Harfield who in the 34th minute beat the offside trap and calmly slotted the ball past the Andover New Street keeper.

Almost immediately from the kick off, Andover New Street attacked down the left wing and the cross towards the goal was handled by the Anna Kedge who received a caution for her protests. Sophy Reed stepped up to take the penalty but could only send it straight at the Fleet keeper who saved with her feet.

The second half started very tentatively with neither side wanting to make any mistakes. Andover tried to change things and after 59 minutes brought on substitute S.Parker. Two minutes later, the ever lively Humphreys had another opportunity but could only shoot wide and from the resulting goal kick, Harfield had a chance at the other end but also shot wide.

With time running out and both sides creating good opportunities, Harfield again beat the Andover offside trap, running onto a through ball before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball into an empty net for the clinching goal.
