England began the defence of their European crown with a 3-1 victory over Scotland as the two sides opened the UEFA Under-19 Championships in Macedonia.

Mo Marley's side opened the scoring with 20 minutes on the clock, Toni Duggan making the most of Lucy Bronze's long ball forward, getting in behind the Scottish defence before hitting low past Gemma Clark.

Less than fifteen minutes later it was 2-0 through Isobel Christiansen's half volley into the corner of the net, a tidy finish after she had made the most of a loose ball inside the area.

It could have been three shortly afterwards but Demi Stokes' header came back off the bar.

Scotland came more into the game after the break and Lisa Robertson almost pulled a goal back when she struck the post, while at the other end, Duggan was denied a second as her shot was cleared off the line by Scotland captain Rachael Small.

Jennifer Beattie breathed life into Scotland midway through the second half, getting on the end of a Rebecca Dempster pass and drilling crisply past Rebecca Spencer, but their challenge was dented within five minutes.

Substitute Laura Coombs restored the two-goal advantage and wrapped up the points for England with a 25-yard effort which gave Clark no chance.

The next round of games is on Thursday, when England take on Italy and Scotland face Germany who defeated the Italians 4-1 in the other group match.
