Writtle Minors Under-14 completed the treble this season by adding the League Cup to the Essex County Cup and League when they overcame West Ham 3-2 in the Final on Sunday. In very hot conditions, both teams were fully committed with West Ham looking to grab their first silverware of the season and Writtle determined to make it a clean sweep of trophies. The Minors were first to grab the initiative with a great finish from Sophie Haydon after a great pass out of defence by Brogan Lambert. The Hammers responded well and it took two great saves by Beth Wood to keep their lead intact but just before half time, West Ham got their reward from a corner and the teams went in level at half time with one goal apiece. The second half saw both teams trading chances but it took until ten minutes from the end until the breakthrough finally came. A great move by West Ham saw their striker bearing down on goal and only a last ditch challenge prevented what was an almost certain goal. However to the surprise of most, the referee saw the tackle as a foul and awarded a penalty which was duly dispatched to put the Hammers ahead for the first time. With time against them, Writtle pushed more players forward and within four minutes were back of level terms after a quick throw from Kaylee Dodd caught the West Ham defence napping and found Elle Georgiou free in the box whose finish was clinical. The next goal would surely win this match and so it proved to be. A great free kick from Haydon was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by the Hammers keeper but the ball fell kindly to Becky Wagstaff who dispatched the ball into the net to give Writtle their third trophy of the season. | |||||||||||||||||||||
