Gills swoop for Sian - 5 Aug 2010 - Women's Football NewsGillingham have completed the signing of former Welsh international defender Sian Cheedy.

The 25-year-old joins the Gills having left Crystal Palace at the end of last season and is looking forward to playing in the Premier League once more.

Talking about her move to the Gills, she said: "I honestly think the Gills are the new up and coming team and will dominate this season and I really want to be a part of that.

"The team train like they play, with the same intensity and attitude and there is a professional atmosphere within and around the team from the manager, coaching staff right through to the players and it is definitely something I want to be a part of."

Sian has also played in Europe for Cardiff City, as well as a spell with Team Bath, and brings with her a wealth of experience to the Gills back line.

She said: "It was a fantastic experience. The games are a lot quicker and the players are a lot stronger, but it was a definite learning curve.

"I have really enjoyed the pre-season games. It has taken me a while to get used to how the team play as they are far more attack than the Club I played for previously.

"So it was a case of changing little things in my game to fit in with the team. I am happy with how things are going and really looking forward to the season ahead."

There is certainly a fair amount of competition now in the Gills back line and Sian is ready to fight for her place in the team.

She added: "Like I have said the team is very good and it will be tough to break into this season that gives an insight into the talent of the players. That should keep everyone on their toes and challenging for a starting place. I think that will be a key factor in succeeding this season."

Manager Ian Varley is delighted to have signed a centre half of Sian's ability as it shows just how the Gills have progressed in a season. He said: "Again it is another signing that adds quality to our squad. Sian has bags of experience at this level and above and she will be a great asset to our team.

"It is always difficult signing players as our location doesn't help but I am really pleased with the quality of player we have been able to attract this summer."
