Glasgow City made it two wins out of two so far in the UEFA Women's Champions League with a convincing 4-0 victory over SK Slovan Bratislava. Playing against an extremely defensive side, City played a patient game but got the opening on 25 minutes when Sue Lappin headed home a corner at the near post. Just before half time, City doubled their lead as Jane Ross finished from close range. In the second period, City continued to battle against the heavily retreated Slovakians, but were able to carve open a number of openings. Both Leanne Ross and Jane Ross hit the bar with headers and Rachel Corsie saw a volley go agonisingly over from inside the box. City were also denied a penalty when it looked like a Slovakian defender handled inside the penalty area. However, despite giving a yellow card, the referee pointed to a free kick right on the edge of the area. The Scottish Champions did make it 3-0, when Corsie hit home an excellent right footed shot from a Lappin knock down. Kat Lindner was then felled in the box and up stepped Ruesha Littlejohn to put away the resultant penalty at the second attempt. Now City face the daunting task of taking on former winners Duisburg in the final group game in a match which will decide which team goes through to the knockout stages. | |||||||||||||||||||||
