Manchester City are the opening day leaders in the Northern Division after they won 3-1 against newly promoted Coventry City.
Becky Grocott put City ahead after six minutes and strike partner Krystle Johnson doubled their advantage just ahead of the interval. Nikki Miles pulled a goal back for Coventry a minute after the restart but Man City sealed the points with ten minutes remaining through a fine header from Abbie McManus.
The other newcomers, Rochdale, also tasted defeat in their first game as they were beaten 3-2 by Leicester City in a well contested match. Jo Potter rifled home on 37 minutes from a Zira Handley cross to give the Foxes the lead, which they increased two minutes into the second half when Lauren Impey headed home a Nat Reay corner. Rochdale quickly pulled one back through a Nat Brewer header and, twelve minutes from time, the scores were level when Rachael Wood fired home a 20-yard free kick that give Leicester goalkeeper Leanne Hall no chance. However City were to hit an 88th minute winner, this time Courtney Sweetman-Kirk heading home from a Potter corner.
Newcastle Utd made a successful trip to Yorkshire, returning home with a 1-0 victory over Leeds City Vixens. Emma Bentley marked her debut for the Magpies with the only goal of the game to give her new club a winning start.
Derby County and Curzon Ashton shared the points in the remaining game, the two sides battling out a goalless draw. A very even contest saw few clear cut chances at either end as the teams cancelled each other out on the day.
