Portsmouth have made a strong start to the Southern Division campaign and sit on top of the fledgling table following their 5-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.
Gemma Hillier gave Pompey the lead after five minutes and she doubled the advantage with her second goal, heading into the break. Keri Ryan then produced a 25-yard strike to send Portsmouth three goals ahead at half time. Zoe Nash, on as a second half substitute, produced two good finishes to round off the victory before Brighton scored a late consolation.
Keynsham Town also started well, returning from Queen's Park Rangers with a 4-0 victory under their belts. Polly Wardle, signed from Andover New Street during the summer, marked her Premier League debut by scoring twice and there was one apiece from Ana Bruni and Dana Hinton.
West Ham Utd sit in third place after they defeated Colchester Utd 2-0. The first half finished goalless before two second half strikes from Tracey Duxbury settled the outcome, although Hammers goalkeeper Toni-Anne Wayne pulled off a penalty save inbetween the two goals.
Gillingham made their Premier League bow with an instant impact, winning 1-0 away to Charlton Athletic. A close game was settled as former Charlton striker Ashlee Hincks scored the only goal of the game via a free kick (see match report).
