Everton took an enormous stride towards the quarter finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League with a superb 4-1 victory away to Brondby in the first leg. After what was described as a "fantastic performance" by manager Mo Marley, the Toffees only need to avert a disaster in the second leg at Widnes next Thursday in order to be amongst the top eight teams in Europe. However there was no sign of what was to come during the early stages as Brondby took a third minute lead as Lene Jansen's pass sent Camille Kur Larsen through to score. Despite the early setback, Everton settled themselves down and there were no scares as the two-time semi finalists took their lead into the interval. Just before the hour mark, Everton grabbed a precious away goal when Signe Priess Andersen was penalised for handball in the area and Fara Williams converted the resulting penalty to level the scores. Rachel Brown needed to save from Sanne Troelsgaard but the momentum was now with Everton and Brooke Chaplen forced a save from Stina Lykke Petersen in the Brondby goal. However in the 79th minute, Everton went in front when Toni Duggan fired home their second. Before Brondby could recover, Chaplen produced a fine solo effort to extend the lead just two minutes later and the in-form midfielder took her tally to five goals in two European matches by scoring her second to complete a marvellous 4-1 result with four minutes remaining.
