Brighton & Hove Albion opened up the Southern Division title race with a 5-4 victory over previously unbeaten leaders West Ham Utd.
Leeta Rutherford and Kim Stenning put the Seagulls two up inside the opening eleven minutes and, although Becky Merritt reduced the arrears five minutes later, Kim Whitcombe ensured Brighton took a 3-1 lead into the interval. Whitcombe then netted her second three minutes into the second half, with Nina Downham responding quickly for the Hammers. An own goal from Libby Pritchard brought West Ham closer but a Sarah Kempson strike four minutes from time proved to be a decisive fifth for Brighton, despite Emma Thomas pulling a goal back deep into injury time.
The Hammers now lead the table by four points from Portsmouth who went second by winning 3-1 against Keynsham Town, who also lost for the first time. Justine Lorton converted a 12th minute penalty for Pompey which was equalised shortly afterwards by Corinne Yorston, but Lauren Murphy restored their lead on the hour and Shelly Cox wrapped up the win with the third goal, four minutes later.
Colchester Utd climbed back into third place on the back of a 2-0 victory at Charlton Athletic. Hannah Gowland netted both goals for the U's, one in each half.
Jemma Tewkesbury kept up her excellent form in front of goal by netting twice for Yeovil Town in their 2-0 win away to Queen's Park Rangers (see match report).
