Cam sew up league title

Cam sew up league title - 18 Jan 2011 - Women's Football News

Cam Bulldogs became the first club in the country to win a league title as they defeated Bristol & West 3-0 to be crowned as Gloucestershire County Women's League Champions.

After having won each of their nine league matches to date, Cam required a victory to sew up the title and they got off to the best possible start, Kirsty Brown giving them the lead after five minutes.

Long serving defender Kirsty Kendall, who had been pushed forward into a midfield role, settled any nerves as she netted the second on the hour mark and minutes later, Charlie Strickland put them further in front from a Jess Brown corner.

Cam could even have had a fourth as they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Kendall but captain Lucy Bennett fired her spot kick over the bar.

The title crowns the best ever achievement for Cam Bulldogs who were formed 15 years ago and for manager Alistair Swan. They came closest to the title in 2008 when they finished as runners-up to Oldland Abbotonians and won the League Cup five years earlier, also reaching the Final on two other occasions.

The squad was boosted at the start of the season with three new arrivals, striker Leanne Rickaby arrived from Dursley Town to form a lethal striking partnership with Michelle Watson, while Louise Carey and Emma Jacobs joined from Yate Town.

They have joined Kendall - manager Swan's daughter - Bev Tanner and goalkeeper Lina Elliott in a defensive unit which has conceded just six goals this season as well as highly rated youngsters Jess Brown and Charlie Strickland, who plays in midfield alongside Lucy Bennett, Vicky Mansell and Kirsty Brown - daughter of former professional Keith Brown.

Cam are now setting their sights on adding the League Cup to their title success as well as completing the league campaign with a 100% record, although they have two tough matches to play against Bitton.
