New team at Welland Valley
 Women's Football News 1 Jun 2011

New team at Welland Valley - 1 Jun 2011 - Women's Football NewsWelland Valley are one of the latest clubs to have started a new girls football team for the forthcoming season.

The club already has over ten youth and mini soccer teams as well as an adult team so the next step was to get a female section started.

The club approached the NFA for some assistance with this and Kathryn Hall, the women and girls football development officer, set up some coaching in two schools local to the club. This coaching was for girls only and took place weekly after school over a period of six to eight weeks.

All of the girls were given letters about the club that was being set up and after a few weeks of training at their school, Welland Valley had found a coach for the team and the first session at the club took place.

Jess, the coach, also plays for another local ladies team and had been interested in taking on her own team, having coming through a similar girls youth system at her club. Zoe, a friend of Jess' helps her out with the team. Zoe was part of last year's Northamptonshire FA Young Leadership Programme and it is good to see her now assisting with the running of the team. Zoe plays for Daventry Town and both girls therefore provide excellent role models to the younger players. Both girls are due to take their Level 1 Coaching Courses soon.

At present, all of the players come from the same school, but we are hoping for a few more from a nearby school to bolster the numbers a bit. The team is currently Under-11 and will be Under-12 for next season (current year 6 players and next season's year 7s).

Jess is keen to instil high standards into her team as she says that she benefitted from this when she was younger. The girls recently received a brand new kit, sponsored by Harrison Murray, a local estate agent, and the girls can be seen here showing it off.

If you would like to start a girls team in your club and are not sure how to go about it or you'd like more information on this particular team, please contact Kathryn Hall on (01604) 678407 or e-mail kathryn.hall@northamptonshirefa.com.
