Winning start for hosts - 27 Jun 2011 - Women's Football NewsGermany 2 (Garefrekes 10, Da Mbabi 42)
Canada 1 (Sinclair 82)
att: 73,680; at the Olympiastadion, Berlin

Two first half goals ensured that hosts Germany got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start in front an astonishing attendance in excess of 73,000 at the Olympic Stadium.

Despite a good start from Germany, Canada missed a glorious opportunity to take the lead as Christine Sinclair shot over the bar with the goal at her mercy.

Back came Germany with Erin McLeod making a good save from Kerstin Garefrekes but the winger was not to be denied moments later as she gave her side the lead with a firm far post header from Babett Peter's cross.

Diana Matheson was narrowly off target with a powerful effort at the other end but Germany were now controlling matters and they doubled their lead ahead of half time as a long ball from Garefrekes was latched onto by Celia Okoyino Da Mbabi who slotted past McLeod for the second goal.

After the break, Germany pressed for more goals and substitute Alexandra Popp came close with a shot from the edge of the area which clipped the top of the bar. Garefrekes should have netted her second goal after being set up by Popp but she shot over with an open goal in front of her.

Simone Laudehr also struck the bar with a long range effort before Canada gave themselves hope with eight minutes remaining. After being fouled 25 yards out, Sinclair curled the resulting free kick over the German wall and beyond the dive of Nadine Angerer to reduce the arrears.

It was the first goal conceded by Germany in a World Cup match since 2003 but there were to be no more scares for the host nation as they got their campaign off in winning style.
