France brush Canada aside

France marched into the World Cup quarter finals for the first time with a game to spare after they demolished a largely punchless Canadian side.

The vibrant French side took up the mantle from the start and it took a save from Erin McLeod to prevent Marie-Laure Delie from giving them the lead.

The breakthrough came in the 24th minute as Louisa Necib threaded the ball to Elise Bussaglia whose shot was deflected and looped to Gaetene Thiney who headed past McLeod to give her side the lead.

France continued to dominate with Necib being denied by a great save from McLeod and Delie twice missing opportunities to double their lead.

Canada tried to respond after the break with the impressive Diana Matheson working hard but could only muster two wayward efforts on goal from Kaylyn Kyle. Christine Sinclair was playing with a face mask to protect her broken nose but could not make an impression against a well drilled French defence.

On the hour mark, France took a firm grip on the game as Emily Zurrer dallied on the ball and was dispossessed by Delie, Thiney picking the ball to curl a 25-yard shot past the diving McLeod to make it 2-0.

Melissa Tancredi could have reduced the arrears just after coming on as a substitute as she got behind the French defence but stumbled with only Berangere Sapowicz to beat. Canada's last chance had gone and France soon went further ahead when Camille Abily escaped her marker from a corner and planted a powerful header into the back of the net.

The rout was completed seven minutes from time as Necib played a pass over the Canadian defence for substitute Elodie Thomis who outpaced the back four before rounding McLeod and sliding the ball home.

France: Berangere Sapowicz, Laure Lepailleur, Sabrina Viguier, Laura Georges, Elise Bussaglia, Sandrine Soubeyrand, Gaetane Thiney (sub Laure Boulleau 79mins), Sonia Bompastor, Marie-Laure Delie (sub Elodie Thomis 74mins), Camille Abily (sub Eugenie Le Sommer 82mins), Louisa Necib.
