Aland, the 2009 winners and tournament favourites, duly won the gold medals in the fourteenth Island Games on Friday.
Their opponents in the final at Cowes were the Isle of Man but the team from Finland brushed them aside with four first half goals after the Manx girls had taken an early lead through Jade Burden. A single own goal after the break confirmed Aland's triumph. The gold medal team had won four matches and drawn one, scoring 23 goals and conceding just three.
The Western Isles of Scotland, having been beaten 4-0 by the Isle of Man in the semi finals, missed out on bronze medals when they lost 1-0 to Greenland.
The hosts finished fifth after two Sarah Wright goals defeated Saaremaa on Thursday. The Isle of Wight team failed to match the gold medal feats of their male counterparts but remained unbeaten and were the only team to match Aland, holding them in the group stages. Wight will rue their failure to beat Jersey in the group stages, the Channel Islanders finishing eighth of ten teams after losing 2-1 to Gotland.
The biennial Games, this time involving 25 teams, 14 sports and over 4000 participants will reconvene in 2013 in Bermuda before returning to these shores when Jersey host the Island Games in 2015.
