Late show earns New Zealand draw
 Women's Football News 6 Jul 2011

New Zealand 2 (Smith 90, Wilkinson 90) Mexico 2 (Mayor 2, Dominguez 29)
att: 20,451; at the Rhein Neckar Arena, Sinsheim

New Zealand stunned Mexico with a late, late fightback to pick up their first point of the tournament and deny their opponents their first ever World Cup win.

Mexico went into the game needing a convincing victory to stand any chance of qualification and they got off to the best possible start, Stephany Mayor breaking through on the right before beating Jenny Bindon at her near post.

New Zealand produced their first meaningful effort on goal as Rosie White's shot was pushed away by Cecilia Santiago only for Amber Hearn to fire the rebound over.

Just before the half hour, Mexico gave themselves a further boost when a long ball caught the New Zealand defence flat footed and Maribel Dominguez raced through to plant her shot past Bindon for the second.

In the second half, chances were scarce at either end with the news of England's 2-0 lead over Japan likely to be filtering through and ending any remaining Mexican hopes.

The game seemed to be drifting towards a Mexico victory but Kiwi captain Rebecca Smith gave her side hope in the 90th minute as she headed in a corner to reduce the arrears.

Four minutes into injury time, substitute Hannah Wilkinson then kept her cool to produce a clinical finish and snatch her side a share of the spoils which had looked unlikely only minutes earlier.

New Zealand: Jenny Bindon, Betsy Hassett (sub Ria Percival 79mins), Anna Green, Katie Hoyle, Abby Erceg, Rebecca Smith, Ali Riley, Hayley Moorwood (sub Kirsty Yallop 60mins), Amber Hearn, Sarah Gregorius, Rosie White (sub Hannah Wilkinson 55mins).
