Lincoln buoyant after Daly double

Lincoln buoyant after Daly double - 23 Jul 2011 - Women's Football NewsBristol Academy 2 (McCatty 49, Yorston pen 90)
Lincoln Ladies 3 (McCatty og 1, Daly 13,53)

Lincoln lifted themselves into the top half of the FA WSL table with a well earned win in appalling weather conditions at Stoke Gifford.
Full back Rachel Daly was the unlikely hero as she scored twice including a second half winner as her team became the first to inflict a home defeat on Bristol Academy at their new home.
There was exactly one minute on the clock when Lincoln - who had only managed two goals in the first half of the season - took the lead. A good passing move on the left involving Jess Clarke and Jodie Taylor led to Academy captain Grace McCatty trying to avert the danger but only succeeding in playing the ball past Siobhan Chamberlain and into her own net.
Corinne Yorston hit back at the other end with a shot that flew straight at Nicola Hobbs in the Lincoln goal but the Lady Imps continued to look dangerous going forward. New signing Taylor was troubling the Academy defence with her strong running up front and Clarke twice had opportunities to extend her side's lead. On the first occasion a block from McCatty saved her team and then Jessica Fishlock made a vital challenge to deny her as she looked poised to score.
However Lincoln soon extended their lead as Casey Stoney rose highest from a Lucy Staniforth corner and, as her header was blocked, Rachel Daly was on hand to slot home the rebound.
Academy responded with a dipping 30-yard shot from Anouk Hoogendijk which Hobbs did well to tip over the bar. Fishlock lifted a free kick over and a scramble led to Leandra Little blocking a Yorston shot on the line as the home side came to life after their sluggish start.
Torrential rain began to pour down on the pitch and the surface soon became saturated, making it difficult for both teams to adjust their game. Lincoln went close to the next opportunity but a vital clearing header from Alex Culvin prevented Sue Smith from getting in.
Fishlock was heavily involved in most of Academy's best moments and one driving run almost took her through the Lincoln defence but, as she got into the area, she was halted by a superb sliding tackle from Little.
Just before half time, Academy had shouts for a penalty as Daly challenged Fishlock in the air but her headed clearance was deemed to be fair.
Academy needed a way back into the game as the second half started and it came within four minutes of the restart. There was an element of luck about it as McCatty, after finding space on the right, drilled in a cross which sailed over the head of Hobbs and into the corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
However the home side were unable to pick up any momentum as they quickly found themselves two goals behind again. Another Staniforth corner was nodded down by Little for Daly who miskicked her initial effort but a poor clearance returned the ball straight back to her and she made no mistake at the second attempt.
The deluge of rain continued and a determined Lincoln shut up shop at the back and were content to try and hit on the break. Academy tried hard to find a way back into the game and Hoogendijk unleashed another good effort on goal but Hobbs - whose handling was exemplary in the unhelpful conditions - was once again equal to it.
A Lincoln counter attack almost led to a fourth goal but the soaking wet pitch was to play a huge part. Firstly, Chamberlain lost her footing as she tried to clear under pressure from Clarke, who slid the ball across goal for Sophie Barker but she also slipped as she looked certain to score.
Academy typically did not give up and scored a late goal at home for the fourth time this season. This time Molly Clark whipped in a cross from the right and Little was penalised for handball. Yorston sent Hobbs the wrong way from the spot but there was no time left to salvage a point and Lincoln closed the game out for the points.
