Liverpool break their duck
 Women's Football News 7 Aug 2011

Chelsea 0 Liverpool 1 (C.Jones 24)
Liverpool ended their miserable winless run with a single goal triumph over Chelsea at the Imperial Fields.

A well contested first half was lit up when a Liverpool corner was turned into the home side's net after 24 minutes after a goalmouth melee with Chloe Jones believed to have got the last touch but it could also be credited as an own goal, such was the confusion in the area.

Chelsea refused to abandon their game plan in search of the equaliser and continued to play out from the back at every opportunity. On the hour mark their perseverance was almost punished when Cheryl Foster stole possession and looked to be heading toward goal before the linesman flagged for offside.

For weeks Robbie Johnson's side have toiled relentless in search of their first three points without success but their efforts were rewarded after another gutsy display.

After 72 minutes Chelsea had arguably their best chance of the game when Ashlee Hincks found herself in the Liverpool box with only Danielle Gibbons to beat. Gibbons, however, demonstrated once again why she is regarded as one of the best shot stoppers in the women's game with a save by her outstretched legs.

In immediate response Liverpool went in search of their second when a cross from the left was met by Foster but once again the afternoon's top class goalkeeping display halted any additions to the scoresheet.

On the 80 minute mark, the summer gave way to lashings of rain but the downpour did little to dampen the action. Laura Coombs found herself 25 yards from goal with the ball bouncing irresistibly before she struck a volley that Gibbons did well to save.

On the final whistle Liverpool's elated players were in celebratory mood as they finally broken their long running FA WSL hoodoo. The win does not alter the Merseyside club's position at the bottom of the table but it goes someway to rewarding the work that tireless captain Vicky Jones and dedicated manager Johnson have done for the team.

Chelsea: Carly Telford, Lara Fay, Sophie Perry, Kylie Davies, Gemma Bonner, Ashlee Hincks, Laura Coombs, Hayley Moorwood (sub Leanne Champ 60mins), Danielle Buet, Helen Lander (sub Naomi Cole 80mins), Kate Longhurst (sub Emma Plewa 85mins). Subs not used: Sarah Quantrill, Shelby Hills,
