Charlton Athletic made the perfect start on their return to the National Division as they defeated Nottingham Forest 4-1 on the opening day.
The Addicks took a 12th minute lead as Ellie Gilliatt was penalised for handball in the area following a corner and Gemma Bryan slotted home the resulting penalty. Forest hit back in style as Natasha Meade levelled with a dipping 25-yard shot but Harley Bennett struck moments before half time to put Charlton back in front.
Kim Dixson gave Charlton a firm grip on the game on 77 minutes as she headed home the third from a Fliss Gibbons cross and substitute Kristina Manktelow sewed up the win with the final goal.
Two second half goals earned Leeds Utd a 2-0 victory over Watford following a tight match at Farsley. Watford started the game well with Sahara Osbourne-Ricketts hitting the bar with a header and Sarah Wiltshire forcing a good save from Jules Draycott and the winger - last season's leading goalscorer in the division - went close once again on the stroke of half time with a volley that was just over.
Kate Natkiel also struck the bar for the Golden Girls early in the second half but Leeds held out and began to threaten with Leah Galton and Clare Sykes both going close. With ten minutes remaining, Leeds were awarded a penalty when Millie Bright was brought down in the area and Sykes stepped up to send her side in front. Watford piled forward in search of an equaliser but a Leeds counter attack led to Galton setting up Bright to mark her 18th birthday by scoring the decisive second goal.
Reading FC Women were narrow victors in the other game to be played, a second half goal from striker Nikki Watts giving them a 1-0 win against newly promoted Coventry City (see match report).
