Sporting Club Albion made a good impact in their first ever Premier League match as they ran out 5-3 winners over Preston North End.
Abbey Pope, Alice Broadbent, Emily Owen, Siobhan Hodgetts and Robyn James were all on target for the Midland Combination title winners, who sit on top of the opening day Northern Division table, with Preston replying through Stacey Marsden, Vicky Westermann and Sam Cadwallader.
Blackburn Rovers meanwhile began the task of reclaiming their National Division status with a 3-1 success at Manchester City. Danielle Sheen netted twice, with Hannah Forster adding the other from a free kick, and City's consolation came from a Lindsay Savage penalty.
Rochdale also got off to a good start as goals from Patrice Shelley, Coral O'Keefe and Chantelle Parry gave them a 3-1 win away to Leeds City Vixens, who found the net through Camille Clarke.
Leicester City made made to work hard as they won 2-0 against newly promoted Rotherham Utd. With half time approaching, the Foxes scored both goals within a minute. Shona Franklin marked her debut with the opener after being put through by Sammy Morris and she turned provider for the second, which was finished off by Grace Teah.
The other league newcomers, Sheffield FC, also had a winning start as they edged out Derby County by the odd goal in five. Jodie Michalska netted the decisive goal with four minutes remaining to add to Kayleigh Mitchell's two earlier strikes, while on target for Derby were Cara Newton and Emily Jeffery.
