Reading FC Women lead the way in the National Division after they notched up a 3-1 victory away to Nottingham Forest.
After a goalless first half, Nikki Watts gave Reading the lead four minutes after the restart with Jemma Connor-Iommi equalising for the home side from the penalty spot. However, two goals in a minute saw Watts complete her hat-trick to take her tally to four in two games and send Reading to the top of the table.
Leeds Utd join Reading on six points in second place, thanks to a 1-0 victory at Barnet. The Bees were making their return to Underhill as their new home but it was Leeds who were to go home with the points after Hayley Sharp netted the clinching goal with four minutes remaining.
Champions Sunderland started their defence of the title in ominous fashion, running out 8-2 winners over Watford. Beth Mead and Rachel Furness each bagged doubles along with Natalie Gutteridge, Sophie Williams, Kelly McDougall and Jordan Atkinson. Katie Owen and Lois Roche replied for the home side (see match report).
Coventry City registered their first ever victory in the National Division, beating opening day leaders Charlton Athletic 1-0. A tight game was settled in the fifteenth minute when Maz Gauntlett netted the only goal.
Cardiff City and Aston Villa each played their first games back in the top flight following their respective promotions and both teams got off the mark as they battled out a goalless draw.
