Arsenal set up treble chance
 Women's Football News 11 Sep 2011

Arsenal 3 (Houghton 32, Carter 36, Little 70) Lincoln Ladies 1 (Allen 59)
Arsenal are just one step away from winning the 'treble' after they booked their place in the Continental Cup Final with a 3-1 victory over Lincoln Ladies at Boreham Wood.

Arsenal goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer was kept busy early doors as Lincoln flew out of the blocks. The Gunners weathered the early storm and Ciara Grant began driving them forward ten minutes in.

Lincoln had an eye-catching inaugural FA WSL season, following up promotion from the Northern Division with a fourth placed finish. So they were rightly confident and Lucy Staniforth flashed a 20th minute shot across the face of goal to show they were not just there to make the numbers up against the Champions.

Around the half hour mark Arsenal's inspirational Rachel Yankey sprung to life and her team grabbed the initiative. Ellen White hit the bar from an incisive centre but on 32 minutes Laura Harvey's team deservedly took the lead when Steph Houghton came steaming in at the back post to crash the ball home.

Houghton then turned provider as Danielle Carter prodded home her defence splitting cross five minutes later.

Lincoln fired a couple of warning shots at the start of the second period and soon had themselves back in the contest thanks to a Remi Allen thunderbolt. Allen picked the ball up with half an hour left and created space before letting rip from 25 yards; her effort nestled in the corner of Spencer's net.

Arsenal showed their mettle and did not wobble. The best form of defence is attack and the Gunners responded with a wonder goal of their own. It was a case of 'anything you can do, I can do better' as Kim Little found the top corner from distance with 20 minutes left.

That polished Lincoln off and the Lady Imps could have suffered a much heavier defeat had it not been for the heroics of Nicola Hobbs in the visitors' goal.

Arsenal: Rebecca Spencer, Stephanie Houghton, Niamh Fahey, Jayne Ludlow, Gilly Flaherty, Ciara Grant, Danielle Carter (sub Jennifer Beattie 60mins), Jordan Nobbs (sub Katie Chapman 78mins), Ellen White, Kim Little, Rachel Yankey (sub Hayley Ladd 90mins).

Lincoln Ladies: Nicola Hobbs, Mel Sutcliffe, Rachel Daly, Lucy Staniforth, Casey Stoney, Sophie Bradley, Megan Harris, Sue Smith, Bonnie Horwood, Remi Allen (sub Sophie Barker 80mins), Jess Clarke.
