City boosted by Lagan hat-trick
 Women's Football News 26 Sep 2011
Sheffield FC remain on top of the Northern Division despite being on the receiving end of a 5-3 defeat away to improving Manchester City.
City went two ahead inside the opening eight minutes through a Steph Spence own goal and Saffron Jordan. Mel Cook replied for Sheffield but Lagan Makin then struck twice for City ahead of the half hour. Ellie Gilliatt and Cook netted either side of half time to bring Sheffield back into the game but Makin completed her hat-trick to settle matters for City.
Preston North End made it four wins on the trot and are level on points with Sheffield after they defeated Blackburn Rovers 2-1. Gemma Watson gave Preston a lead which was doubled by Sarah Berry, with Kim Turner replying for previously unbeaten Blackburn.
Sporting Club Albion won 3-0 at Leicester City and are just one point behind the leaders. The Foxes had the better of the first half but couldn't convert their chances as Natalie Reay, Issy Hayes and Destiney Toussaint all fired wide. Albion showed them how to do it in the second period when Robyn James put them ahead in the 48th minute. Emily Owens added the second and three minutes later, James grabbed her second to give the visitors the points.
Derby County put themselves in touch with the leading sides by beating Rochdale 2-1. Cara Newton's early strike for Derby was quickly cancelled out by Michelle Walsh but Hannah Ward struck midway through the second half to settle matters for County.
The two teams still searching for their first points came face to face and it was Rotherham Utd who emerged as 2-1 winners over Leeds City Vixens. Tennisha Watson-Phillips opened the scoring for Leeds but Paige Crossman equalised five minutes before the break and Sophie Barker grabbed a vital decider for Rotherham with ten minutes remaining.
