F.A.Women's Cup - Road to the Final
Our Southern tie is a local derby, this time between two teams who play in the Bristol area but this will be the first time they have ever met.
Downend Flyers have long been established as a girls football club which has played in the Bristol Girls League for many seasons, but they took their first steps into senior football in 2002 when they entered the Gloucestershire County Women's League and won the Division Two title at the first attempt. 2005-06 has been the club's best season to date as they carried off the league title and completed the 'double' when a late Debbie Stacey goal gave them victory over Oldland Abbotonians in the League Cup Final.
They were promoted to the South West League where they have remained ever since. Last season they finished a creditable fifth in the league but their best form was reserved for the Cups, reaching the semi finals of the Bristol Soccerworld Cup as well as the County Cup Final, where they gave a good account of themselves in going down to Filton College. This season they have made a good start and lie in second place in Eastern Division One.
The team is managed by Geoff Beazer and captained by Kate Michaels, who forms a good partnership up front with Laura Baker and Alana Willson. Goalkeeper Zoe Hodgson has been with the club since it entered senior football and other key players include the likes of Danielle Beazer, Karina Cockell and Katie Loveridge.
Bristol Ladies Union FC was formed in June 2008 from the merger of the girls sections of Shirehampton Colts FC and Rockleaze Rangers FC with the University of Bristol Women's Football Club. The club has a pathway for girls and ladies from Under-8 all the way through to adult football.
The first team play in the South West Women's League Premier Division, finishing fourth last season and currently lying in fourth this time around. The junior section of the club plays in the Bristol Girls League and, since formation, have already tasted success by winning league titles.
This is the first time the club has entered the FA Women's Cup and there is a real buzz of excitement within the squad. Peter Root is manager of the team which is excellently coached by Robbie Fox.
The majority of the squad has been together since the club was formed and captain Thandi McNair is an excellent defender. Frankie Stone has been one of the most prolific strikers in the league in recent seasons, having also played for Keynsham Town in the Premier League, and Katie Corkhill is another regular on the scoresheet. Amy Clift, Sarah White and Sarah Lever are other first team regulars whilst Katy Little, who has played top flight football with Bristol City, is a recent signing.
The match will be played at DRG Stapleton FC and is set to be a close clash with Downend looking to prove their credentials against one of the better teams from the division above.
