Currie too hot for Brentford - 24 Oct 2011 - Women's Football NewsBrentford 1 Oxford City 2
Oxford City progressed into the Third Round Qualifying of the FA Women's Cup with a hard fought 2-1 win at Brentford.
In a very competitive and even contest, City secured a place in the draw, providing a huge lift for a much changed team which has had a testing start in the Southern Regional League after relegation from the South West Combination.
Brentfrord pressed their visitors back for long periods in the second half and were full value for their equaliser, but it was City who found the crucial finish to take the honours.
Oxford took the lead on 17 minutes from a corner taken short to Mikaela Green at the edge of the area and her low shot rebounded in off the far post. Oxford were dominating possession with Jemma Young lively on the right. Nikki Olin fired over from another corner, then Brentford keeper Sian Osmond made a fine save after another corner was half cleared.
Brentford looked threatening down both wings, Lisa Grant and Vicky James making inroads at times but Oxford skipper Emma Kidd was in dominant form in central defence. Grant opened up the visitors back line with a low cross but keeper Jules Jefferis made a fine double save on 42 minutes from Isabelle Harvey to preserve Oxford's interval lead.
Brentford stepped up their game after the break and dominated proceedings for most of the second half, moving the ball around very effectively to test the City back four. The visitors stood up well until a good run and pass by James set up Grant for a cool finish from ten yards for the equaliser on 70 minutes.
City quickly restored their lead on 73 minutes with a period of pressure, their first of the half, when Abigail Currie blasted in a super finish from a bouncing ball twelve yards out. However, Brentford
quickly resumed their dominance as they sought a second equaliser.
Grant was just wide with a snap shot from the edge of the area, Kidd nearly conceded an own goal from a searching cross then substitute Jen Filder sent in a dangerous corner which bobbled around the six yard box. Finally, Jefferis made a fine save at the feet of Antoinette McPherson from a Grant cross which fizzed low into the box as Oxford fought to preserve their hard won advantage.
The celebrations at the final whistle showed what the win meant to the visitors. Brentford are having a good season in Division One (London) of the London and South East League and will be disappointed not to progress in the FA Cup but Oxford City will hope to build on the good spirit and character shown in this win to make progress on all fronts.
