Leicester City are back on top of the Northern Division after winning 2-0 away to previous leaders Sporting Club Albion.
In a strong encounter between two of the top sides, Leicester struck first when Natalie Reay hit a fierce 25-yard free kick in the 17th minute that keeper Becky Thomas parried out but Issy Hayes followed up to slot home. Debutant Foxes keeper, Aimee Sperry, made a fine save from Robyn James. City nearly added number two just before the interval when Katie Lowder headed against the Albion crossbar from a Reay corner.
In the second period, Emily Owen and James both fired wide for the home side. At the other end, City's Shona Franklin went close but the Foxes added number two in the 65th minute when Reay whipped in a free kick that skipper Sammy Morris headed home.
Manchester City picked up their eighth win in nine games, a 2-1 success at Sheffield FC, which moves them into second place and head a trio of clubs - the others being Sporting Club Albion and Sheffield FC - on goal difference, one point off the pace. Amanda Goodwin gave City the lead in the opening minute and Kelly McLellan added a second just before half time. Leanne De Silva reduced the arrears after the break but City held out to maintain their charge up the table.
Blackburn Rovers kept their faint hopes alive and struck a huge blow to the hopes of Preston North End by beating them 2-1 in their local derby. First half goals from Katie Anderton and Danielle Sheen gave Rovers the points, despite Alison Taberner grabbing a consolation for Preston late on.
Derby County came away from Rochdale with a 3-1 victory under their belts. A Sarah Jones own goal put Derby ahead late on and the lead was doubled on the hour by Precious Hamilton. Jo Traynor pulled a goal back for Dale but Derby made the game safe when Sam Griffiths netted the third in injury time.
Rotherham Utd are within two points of the safety zone after they defeated Leeds City Vixens 5-1. Natalie Shaw and Sophie Barker put Rotherham two ahead at half time, with Kat Bird reducing the arrears early after the restart. Grace John immediately restored the two-goal advantage and she completed her double, before Shaw netted her second in the dying minutes.
