Sunderland stayed top of the National Division on goal difference after running out 6-1 winners over Nottingham Forest.
Beth Mead resumed her excellent goalscoring form after the holiday break, netting twice inside the opening fifteen minutes to take her tally for the season to 16. Steph Bannon added a third and Keira Ramshaw increased their lead ahead of the break. Ramshaw completed her double late on and, after Aileen Whelan had pulled a goal back for Forest, Rachel Furness rounded off the scoring for Sunderland in injury time.
Leeds Utd kept up their title challenge but were pushed all the way when beating Reading FC Women 3-2. Melissa Fletcher gave Reading an early lead but goals shortly before half time by Emma Lipman and Clare Sykes turned matters around in Leeds' favour. Millie Bright added a third soon after the restart and, although Fletcher netted her second for Reading a minute later, Leeds held out for three important points.
Charlton Athletic cemented themselves in third place with a 1-0 win away to Cardiff City. Fliss Gibbons netted the only goal of the game for the Addicks with seventeen minutes remaining.
Watford picked up a crucial point from a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa to keep their survival hopes alive. Kayleigh Griffiths had given Villa the lead on the stroke of half time but Sarah Wiltshire equalised three minutes from time to ensure a share of the spoils for Watford.
