Wales 1 (James 90) Portugal 0
Wales opened up their Algarve Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over tournament hosts Portugal
A late, late goal gaves Wales the perfect start to the tournament and avenged a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Portuguese in the same tournament a year ago.
Jarmo Matikainen made two changes to his starting line up with Katie Sherwood returning to the centre of midfield as well as Jessica Fishlock, who won her 50th cap.
17-year-old substitute Angharad James was the Wales hero as she scored the winning goal in injury time to settle a tight match. It was the Arsenal midfielder’s first goal for her country in only her third cap, having only come on five minutes earlier.
Wales are next in action on Friday when they take on the Republic of Ireland, who went down to a surprise 1-0 defeat to Hungary in the other group game.
Wales: Rhian Nokes, Kylie Davies, Loren Dykes, Sophie Ingle, Jayne Ludlow, Katie Sherwood, Helen Breazard (sub Amie Lea 45mins), Michelle Green, Jessica Fishlock (sub Angharad James 85mins), Helen Lander (sub Natasha Harding 88mins), Gwennan Harries (sub Hannah Keryakoplis 80mins). Subs not used: Nicola Davies, Kayleigh Green, Nia Jones, Hayley Ladd.
