Wales and Ireland draw blank

Wales and Republic of Ireland battled out an entertaining goalless draw in their second Algarve Cup group match.

With Portugal beating Hungary 4-0 in the other match, a win over the Hungarians on Monday would guarantee Wales top spot in their group although the possibility still remains of all four teams finishing level on four points.

Jarmo Matikainen made two changes to the starting line up which beat Portugal two days earlier with Nicola Davies replacing Rhian Nokes in goal and Hannah Keryakoplis making her first start in place of Helen Bleazard. Gwennan Harries, in contrast, was winning her 50th cap.

Ireland chose to rest some of their senior players but Emma Byrne, who missed their surprise defeat to Hungary through illness, returned to the side and captained her country for the first time. The Arsenal goalkeeper was called into action early on as she denied Harries.

Ireland hit back with Grace Murray clipping the bar with an effort and Julie Ann Russell bringing out a save from Davies but the deadlock could not be broken ahead of the interval.

The second half was a much more cagey affair with few opportunities at either end but Wales, who stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to four matches, would have been the happier side with the outcome.
