West Ham Utd's hopes of winning the Southern Division title were brought to an end after they were beaten 3-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Hammers needed to win their final league game in order to take over the leadership but despite Becky Merritt giving them the lead in the opening minute of the second half, Kim Stenning levelled the scores six minutes later and Brighton went on to take the points with further strikes from Kim Whitcombe and Clio Tregear.
The result leaves Colchester Utd in top spot and guarantees them a top two place but things are very much in Portsmouth's hands now. Two victories in their remaining three games will clinch the title for Vanessa Raynbird's side and promotion to the National Division.
Meanwhile in the Northern Division, Manchester City returned to the top of the table with a 3-2 victory over Preston North End.
Krystle Johnston gave City the lead midway through the first half with Hannah Bailey equalising moments later, then Preston went in front on the stroke of half time through Melissa Ball. Becky Grocott levelled matters once again within ten minutes of the restart and Danni Young settled the game in City's favour with a late winning goal.
City now require eight points from their final four matches in order to be confirmed as Champions.
