Bristol Academy 3 Blackburn Rovers 0
Bristol Academy are one step away from a return journey to the F.A.Women's Cup Final after proving far too strong for Blackburn Rovers in their quarter final tie at Stoke Gifford.
The Northern Division side tried hard but the result was never really in doubt after Academy took an early lead after just seven minutes of play. Winning a corner on the left, Jessica Fishlock's kick was met with a header from Michelle Green which was initially blocked, but the midfielder was on hand to force home the rebound from close range.
Academy began to dictate the pace of the play although their passing was a little erratic at times. Spanish international Laura Del Rio was causing problems with her running at the Blackburn defence and the former Boston Breakers striker made it 2-0 on 24 minutes, albeit with a fortuitous goal. Del Rio's cross from near the goal line looper over Krystal Parker and struck the inside of the far post before bouncing into the net.
At the other end, Nichol Forster was inches away from connecting with a volley from Beth Donoghue's cross but it was Academy who were next to go close when Loren Dykes hit the post with a shot from the edge of the area.
The first half had seen few chances but one came early in the second half, however Nikki Watts was denied by a superb diving save from Parker. The third goal was not long in coming though, Corinne Yorston drilling a free kick from near the touchline which found its way through a crowded area and inside the far post. The Academy captain claimed the goal although it may have taken a deflection off Natasha Harding on its way in.
Watts twice went close to getting on the scoresheet and Del Rio fired over as Academy sought more goals but it was Blackburn who went closest when Siobhan Chamberlain misjudged a long ball from Lizzie Ince but she was rescued by Jemma Rose, who got back to hook the ball off the line.
All in all the three-goal margin reflected matters accurately as Academy were in control of matters throughout and Blackburn, largely through their hard work and the handling of impressive goalkeeper Parker, did not deserve a heavier defeat.
