Portsmouth require one win from their final two matches to clinch the Southern Division title following their 2-1 victory away to Gillingham.
Gemma Hillier got Pompey off to the perfect start by giving them the lead in the opening minute and Charley Wilson put them further ahead just before the half hour. Anelle Massey pulled a goal back for the Gills midway through the second half but Portsmouth held on to take them closer to their target.
At the other end of the table, Plymouth Argyle grabbed a precious win which takes them out of the bottom two and greatly boosts their chances of reaching safety. A second half goal from Emily Mousley earned them a 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion and one more point from their final two matches would guarantee Argyle survival.
There was almost a shock in the Northern Division as Leeds City Vixens, who went into the game with fifteen straight defeats this season, raced into a two-goal lead against high riding Sheffield FC inside the opening 25 minutes. Alex Hindwood gave them the lead and Abbie McIver added the second, and the Vixens held on to the two-goal advantage until the hour mark when Kayleigh Mitchell pulled one back from the penalty spot. Ellie Gilliatt levelled the scores and Jodie Michalska broke Vixens' hearts by completing the comeback and giving Sheffield a 3-2 win with six minutes left.
