League leaders Sunderland still harbour hopes of a potential League and Cup 'double' after they defeated Manchester City 4-0 to reach the Premier League Cup quarter finals.
Beth Mead gave the Lady Black Cats the lead against the Northern Division leaders on the quarter hour and Sophie Williams added the second a minute later. Second half strikes from Kelly McDougall and Mead rounded off the win for Sunderland and booked them a tough trip to Aston Villa in the last eight.
Leeds Utd also remain firmly in the running for two trophies as they also won 4-0 against Derby County. The Northern Division side held out until just before half time when Hayley Sharp opened the scoring for Leeds and three goals in a twelve minute spell during the second half put the result beyond doubt. Sarah Danby doubled the lead on the hour before Sharp netted her second and Carey Huegett completed the scoring. Leeds also have an awkward away trip in the quarter finals at Charlton Athletic.
There was some joy though for a Northern Division side against top flight opposition as Blackburn Rovers won 4-3 away to Reading FC Women. Keeleigh Savage, Danielle Sheen, Gail Pennington and Nichol Forster scored their goals with Fran Kirby (2) and Lois Roche replying for the home side. Blackburn will now be at home to Portsmouth, thus guaranteeing at least one side from outside the National Division in the quarter finals.
Quarter final draw:
Aston Villa v Sunderland
West Ham Utd v Coventry City
Charlton Athletic v Leeds Utd
Blackburn Rovers v Portsmouth
