Newcastle United secured the Northern Combination title with an emphatic 4-0 win over their closest rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Retford Football Club in Sheffield.
Braces from strikers Stacy Crooks and Stephanie Eadon secured all three points for the visitors, as captain Sarah Wilson and her fellow defenders kept a clean sheet to take Newcastle back into the Premier League at the first time of asking following their relegation at the end of last season. Congratulations must go to the squad as a whole, who thoroughly deserve promotion after a wonderful season and a 19-match unbeaten run.
Newcastle manager Michael Havelock said: "The whole management team are delighted to see the ladies win the league. It is their hard work and effort that has got them this far. It is a massive achievement to do what they have done, especially sealing the title away from home at their closest rivals.
"As a manager you could not ask for any more from a group of players. Now it's on to the next game against Bradford at home, we must continue our unbeaten league run."
Coach Warren Teasdale added: "Alan Hansen once said that'"You will never win anything with kids'. Well, he was proved wrong again yesterday with a fabulous win away to our closest rivals for the title. It was a performance that oozed composure, effort and determination and our young side should be very proud of themselves both individually and as a group of players.
"The title was confirmed on a sunny afternoon in Retford but was won throughout the season with a string of gutsy away performances and consistent home form. It was a fantastic day for everyone associated with the club and a fitting reward for all of the hard work put in this season, not only by the players but by the coaching staff, committee and supporters, a real team effort! Congratulations to Mike Havelock for transforming both the results and the playing culture at the club in such a short space of time, his record and the team performances speak for themselves, Brilliant!!!"
Sarah Wilson said: "We did it, the hard work finally paid off. After a bit of a shaky start we got ourselves back on track and just kept going. From the beginning of the season it was always our aim to finish in the top end of the table. I'm so proud of everyone's individual efforts yesterday coming together, it was an overall brilliant team performance. The girls showed so much passion and determination, it was very clear who wanted it more, it was a big test of character.
"We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone off the pitch for all the support, especially Michael, Warren and Julie, we couldn't have done it without you!"
