Academy take opening honours
 Women's Football News 9 Apr 2012

Liverpool 1 (Twohig 89) Bristol Academy 4 (Fishlock pen 20,47, Watts 59, Lawley 59)
Bristol Academy sit on top of the FA WSL table following the opening day's fixtures after three goals early in the second half carried them to a comfortable victory at Skelmersdale.

Liverpool created the first opportunity of the game as Katie Brusell's shot was held by Siobhan Chamberlain whilst at the other end, Jessica Fishlock was just off target as she lobbed the oncoming Aroon Clansey.

Academy were given the opportunity to take the lead on twenty minutes as a Corinne Yorston corner reached the far post where Nikki Watts' shot was adjudged to have been handled by Cheryl Foster and a penalty was awarded. Fishlock stepped up to find the net from the spot to send her side ahead.

Academy were grateful to the agility of goalkeeper Chamberlain minutes later to keep on to their lead when needing to adjust before palming the ball away after a Michelle Evans free kick had taken a deflection. Hannah Keryakoplis, who had come on as a first half substitute following an injury to Sam Chappell, also went close with a dipping shot but Academy took their one-goal advantage into the break.

The second half could not have started worse for the home side, firstly, after Clansey had denied Laura Del Rio Garcia with a good save, Fishlock doubled the lead when scoring direct from the resulting corner.

Before Liverpool could recover, they found themselves three down following another corner. After Evans had blocked Grace McCatty's initial shot, the resulting kick was headed in by Watts for a goal on her WSL debut.

Another Academy debutant, Melissa Lawley, then added the fourth shortly before the hour mark.

Liverpool did rally and almost pulled a goal back when Chamberlain saved from both Brusell and Kelly Jones during a goalmouth scramble and the home side also saw penalty appeals for handball turned down.

Liverpool did get on the scoresheet in the dying minutes as Evans' flick found Nicky Twohig and the defender fired home past Chamberlain.

Sadly a good day for Academy finished on a sour note as two of their key players were red carded in injury time. McCatty was sent off for kicking out at Brusell and this sparked off a brawl between players and the benches, leading to Yorston also being dismissed.
