Everton and Birmingham in stalemate
 Women's Football News 23 Apr 2012

Everton and Birmingham each had to settle for a point as neither side could find a breakthrough in a hard fought encounter.

After a tight first ten minutes the visitors took control and Rachel Brown had to come to the edge of her area to clear after Eniola Aluko had beaten the offside trap.

The woodwork then came to the Toffees' rescue as the ever dangerous Aluko unleashed a powerful drive which cannoned off the upright. Brown then had to be alert five minutes later, this time pulling off a smart save at point blank range from Rachel Williams, who had found space in the area.

Birmingham were in again when a mistake from Lindsay Johnson allowed Aluko in behind but Brown was once again on hand to smother the danger.

Everton rarely threatened in the first half, a Jody Handley cross being easily gathered by Birmingham goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer while Amy Kane fired over from 25 yards.

The second half saw Everton come more into the game; Toni Duggan had a volley bravely blocked by Jade Moore in the area and the Everton striker was again involved a minute later, but she dragged her shot wide after latching onto a loose header from Laura Bassett.

Both sides continued to press for a win - Fara Williams had a 30-yard free kick deflected wide while Aluko continued to cause problems to the back line - but neither side could find the killer chance.
