Reading FC Women claimed the Berks and Bucks FA Cup for the third year in a row, beating Chesham United 3-1 in the Final at Abingdon on Sunday evening.
The match up was a repeat of the 2010 Final and much more comfortable than the shootout victory two years ago. Two goals from Becky Jane and a third from Stacie Donnelly setlled the issue before a stoppage time penalty by Shantell Woodward gave the South West Combination team a welcome consolation.
The match was goalless in the first half, though Reading had created a number of decent chances. Jane then Fran Kirby had gone close but the Royals' best effort led to a goal line clearance by Lisa Nixon which was the final kick of the half.
As the weather worsened into a hailstorm and then torrential rain, so the Royals took charge of the game. Excellent work from Donnelly in midfield released Kirby who outpaced her marker and crossed for Jane to guide the ball in from close range. The same player doubled the advantage when a loose clearance fell her way ten yards out.
Donnelly got forward to finish at the second attempt to seal the win with fifteen minutes left. As the pitch started to flood, Chesham, who had competed well and occasionally threatened Grace Moloney's goal, were awarded a penalty. The final whistle a few seconds later was probably a welcome relief to players, officials and those spectators not protected in the two stands. Celebrations were naturally brief but intense for the Royals player and staff.
The club could also celebrate a double triumph as Reading FC Women Reserves claimed the Junior Cup with a 4-0 victory over Ascot United in the afternoon sunshine.
