Gunners march to top of table
 Women's Football News 27 Apr 2012

Arsenal replaced Chelsea at the top of the FA WSL after beating them 3-1 in front of a record WSL crowd of 5,052 at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal seized the initiative early on with Rachel Yankey curling a free kick just wide and Jordan Nobbs having a goal disallowed after a foul on Carly Telford.

Katie Chapman was next to go close as she met a cross from Alex Scott but her header brought out an excellent reaction save from Telford. Steph Houghton fired over and Telford saved from Little as Chelsea held out to keep the scoreline goalless at the interval.

Telford had to be substituted at half time and her replacement, Sarah Quantrill, found herself picking the ball out of the net within two minutes of the restart. Kim Little broke into the area and beat Quantrill with a neat chip to give her side the lead.

Quantrill was again called into action and pulled off a good save from a powerful long range strike by Houghton.

Arsenal added their second goal midway through the second half and this time Little turned provider, sending in a cross for Chapman to find the net with a firm header.

Chelsea had battled hard to keep themselves in the game up until this point but, just as it seemed that it was slipping away from them, they grabbed themselves a lifeline. Kate Longhurst found space on the edge of the area and gave Emma Byrne no chance with a superbly struck shot to bring the Blues back into the match.

The game remained in the balance until injury time, when Little found the top corner for her second goal to ensure that the Gunners have the only remaining 100% record in the league after just two matches.
