Sheffield Utd Community went into their final fixture of the season on Sunday against Peterlee Town needing a point to be absolutely sure of being confirmed as Champions of the North East League Premier Division, even though they knew it required results of epic proportions for them not to win the title.
Cheryl Mawhood, Ami Buzzeo and Tania Marsden scored in a first half dominated by United, but Peterlee hit back in the second half with Rachel Hedley and Claire Bridgett reducing the arrears. Only the woodwork prevented Samantha Loxley levelling but United held out for a 3-2 victory which sees them take the title and promotion to the Northern Combination next season.
In the end though, any result would have been enough for United on the day as Hull City, the only side with any possible chance of overhauling them, were held to a 4-4 draw by Whitley Bay.
Emma Bentley, Laura Darmody, Nicola Gray and Julie Twaddle were all on the scoresheet for Whitley but Hull, who led the table for a huge part of the season, have to settle for the runners-up position with Barnsley in third.
