England went down to a 1-0 defeat to Sweden in their opening group match of the UEFA Under-19 Championship Finals in Turkey.
England did start the game well with Danielle Carter and Beth Mead looking sharp up front but fell behind just after the half hour when Jaz Matthews was penalised for handball in the area and Malmo striker Elin Rubensson slotted home the resulting penalty.
Jennie Nordin went close to adding a second minutes later when she headed a Malin Diaz corner just wide. However England got over the setback and twice went close to equalising before half time when Beth England shot narrowly wide on both occasions.
In the second half, England were unable to make an impression on a well drilled Swedish defence who dealt well with any threats, particularly aerially.
England goalkeeper Mary Earps made good saves from Rubensson and Petra Andersson to keep her side in the game and Therese Bostrom struck the bar.
Spain eased to a 3-0 victory over Serbia in the other group game and Mo Marley's side have to register a good results against the Spanish on Thursday in order to keep their semi final hopes alive.
