Festival success at the Wythenshawe Games
 Women's Football News 24 Jul 2012

Festival success at the Wythenshawe Games - 24 Jul 2012 - Women's Football NewsTuesday saw the FA Girls' Football Festival, supported by Continental Tyres, Sport England and UEFA visit the Wythenshawe Games, near Manchester.

More than 200 girls, most of them playing for the first time, took part in a free programme led by FA coaches and aimed at encouraging girls to get involved in the game. The Festival, which lasted from 1pm to 4pm, synchronised with the Wythenshawe Games 2012 which itself seeks to engage in sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Participants were accompanied by FA Women's Super League (FA WSL) players from Liverpool Ladies FC and England Under-19 players Sam Chappell and Danielle Lea. The stars of the league interacted with the girls and a Q & A was held to give an insight into the life of a semi-professional female footballer. Players signed autographs, had their photos taken with participants, and took part in the coaching sessions.

Activities included the ContiWarmUp programme, skills and drills, matches inside an inflatable pitch, interactive games (speed cage & batak board), competitions, prizes and goodies for all and digital stations to entertain the girls during breaks from playing. Girls also had the chance to pose with the FA WSL trophy. The FA WSL mascot Berry was also in attendance to cheer on the girls and add to the atmosphere.

Also supporting the event was Manchester County FA who had a stand of information, detailing how to get involved in football in the local area.

"This is great to see these girls of all age groups having a taste of football. Lots are playing for the first time. It's a fantastic opportunity to get them involved and raise interest in the game and in The FA WSL, especially with the women's Olympic Football Tournament starting tomorrow."
