World Champions Japan swept in to the semi finals of the Olympic Games football tournament with a 2-0 victory over Brazil at the Millennium Stadium.
Yuki Ogimi gave Japan a first half lead which they never really looked like conceding against a disappointing Brazilian side. After the break, Brazil did press hard to try and get an equaliser but could not find a way through and Japan sealed victory through a counter attack which culminated with a superb finish from Shinobu Ohno to send her side on their way to Wembley for the semi finals.
Japan's opponents will be France, who are through to the last four at the first attempt following their 2-1 win against Sweden at Hampden Park.
Sweden went into a 17th minute lead as a corner from Marie Hammerstrom deflected in off Nilla Fischer but France were level just before the half hour when Laura Georges headed home from another corner. Fellow central defender Wendie Renard then put France ahead just before half time and they held on in the second half to clinch a hard earned victory.
Gold medal favourites United States meanwhile eased through by beating New Zealand 2-0 at St James' Park. The Football Ferns worked hard and gave their best but USA always looked comfortable after going ahead in the 27th minute when Abby Wambach turned in Alex Morgan's cross. However it wasn't until late on that substitute Sydney Leroux put the result beyond doubt to set up her side with an all-North American semi final with Canada, conquerors of Great Britain, at Old Trafford on Monday.
