Sunderland march on at the top of the National Division after picking up their fourth straight win, but were pushed all the way by a gritty Aston Villa side in their 2-1 success.
The Wearsiders led at half time through a Kelly McDougall penalty and they extended their advantage with twenty minutes remaining when Keira Ramshaw scored with a perfectly executed volley from a Sophie Williams cross. Katie Wilkinson curled home a free kick to give Villa late hope but Sunderland held on to maintain their three point lead at the top.
Leeds Utd are up into second place after recording their third victory in a row, 3-2 away to Charlton Athletic. In-form striker Carey Huegett put Leeds in front on 16 minutes with Gemma Shepherd equalising just before the half hour. Leeds restored their lead on the stroke of half time through Tanya Rich but the Addicks looked to have secured themselves a point when Courtney Gibson levelled the scores. However with eight minutes left, captain Clare Sykes settled matters in Leeds' favour with a winning strike to keep her sides on the heels of Sunderland.
Portsmouth had started the day in second place but they went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Coventry City. The only goal of the game came midway through the second half, Helen Dermody netting for the second week in a row to lift the Sky Blues into the top half of the table.
