Everton challenge takes knock
 Women's Football News 23 Sep 2012

Lincoln Ladies 2 (Johnson og 29, Staniforth 32) Everton 1 (Williams 84)
Everton's hopes of finishing in the runners-up spot in the FA WSL received a huge dent as two first half goals condemned them to defeat at Lincoln.

The Blues needed a win to stay in the hunt for second place in the WSL and a place in Europe but defeat to the Lady Imps means they must win their last match and hope second placed Birmingham City lose their final two fixtures.

Everton were two goals down at the break and couldn't find a way back into the game. Lincoln had already applied plenty of pressure to Rachel Brown's goal before taking the lead in bizarre fashion.

Jess Clarke, whose pace caused Everton problems all afternoon, cut in from the left and sent in a low cross. Both Brown and Lindsay Johnson tried the clear, but the ball spun into the air with Johnson inadvertently heading it past her own keeper.

While Lincoln's first goal was a scruffy affair, their second was an absolute scorcher. Lucy Staniforth was precise from fully 35 yards after Brown had rushed from her goal to deny Clarke.

Everton boss Mo Marley made a change at half time with substitute keeper Danielle Hill replacing the presumably injured Brown. Hill endured a nervy moment early in the second when a mix-up with a defender presented Megan Harris with an open goal but with the goal at her mercy the Lincoln skipper could not keep the ball down.

It almost proved to be a key miss when, at the other end, Jill Scott broke through, only to be denied by a terrific save from Nicola Hobbs.

Lincoln wasted another glorious chance just past the hour when Sophie Barker's deep cross caused havoc in the home defence, but Precious Hamilton screwed the ball wide when she should have at least hit the target.

The visitors were given hope five minutes from time when Fara Williams' free kick found the net after taking a massive deflection but Lincoln held out to keep their own hopes of a top half finish alive.
