Two-goal Beth keeps winning run going - 1 Oct 2012 - Women's Football NewsSunderland preserved their lead of three points at the top of the National Division by winning 3-2 away to Manchester City.
Beth Mead got the Wearsiders off to a flying start by giving them a third minute lead with Lindsay Savage making sure that City went into the interval with the scores level. Sophie Williams put Sunderland back in front just after the hour and Becky Lee equalised once more for the home side. With nine minutes remaining, Mead scored her second goal to sew up Sunderland's fifth straight win of the season.
Leeds Utd kept up the chase in second place by beating Barnet 2-0. Tanya Rich put the Yorkshire side ahead during the first half and they wrapped up the points with seven minutes remaining when Danielle Sheen netted the second goal.
Watford kept up their good start to the season with a 2-0 success away to Coventry City. Sarah Wiltshire opened up the scoring for the Golden Girls on the nine minute mark and a Sue Wood own goal early in the second half completed the win which keeps Watford in third.
Cardiff City Ladies climbed up into fourth place on the back of an impressive 4-0 victory at Aston Villa. Goals from Kelly Aldridge and Natalie Lawrence ensured that the South Wales side were two ahead at half time, with Lauren Townsend and Ellie Smith striking each side of the hour mark to wrap up the win.
After four matches without a win, Charlton Athletic broke their duck in style as they defeated Portsmouth 7-2. Gemma Bryan gave the Addicks a lead which was doubled by Gemma Shepherd and although Charley Wilson pulled one back for Pompey just before the interval, Bryan restored the two-goal advantage on the stroke of half time. Kirsty McGee reduced the arrears eight minutes after the restart but goals from Kim Dixson and Ellie Stenning put Charlton in control and Kristina Manktelow added a sixth before Bryan completed her second hat-trick in successive weeks.
