Scotland through to elite round
 Women's Football News 23 Oct 2012

Scotland are through to the UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship elite round with a match to spare after a 2-0 win over Group Five hosts Turkey.

Heather Richards scored a goal in each half to seal the win, which takes her tally to three goals in two matches.

Scotland and Norway top the group with six points each, with Scotland boasting a superior goal difference, and will both go through to the next round in April 2013. The two sides face each other in the final group match on Thursday.

Scotland opened the campaign with a comprehensive 8-0 win over Belarus and have now reached the elite round for the third season in a row.

Coach Shelley Kerr told www.scottishfa.co.uk: "It's so important to reach the elite round in terms of the players' development.

"If you miss out on the second phase you lose the opportunity to play another round of competitive matches. That's the important thing for me.

"The next round will be challenging for the players, and that's the only way that you can continue to develop at this level.

"It was a great team performance today. We played really well all over the pitch.

"Getting the win takes the pressure off going into the last match against Norway. They are renowned for performing well at this level. They are a strong, physical side, so we face a tough match on Thursday.

"We will be looking to go out and put on another strong performance, but getting the win today means that the players can perhaps enjoy the last match a bit more.

"I've been really pleased with the performances in both matches so far. We've scored a lot of goals, but you only get the opportunity to go ahead in a match if you defend well too.

"In the first match we scored goals from all over the pitch. Our forwards, our wide players, defenders, they were all on target.

"The variation in our attacking play has been excellent and we'll be looking to take that into the final match."

Scotland Under-19: Hannah Reid, Chloe Arthur, Stephanie Knox, Siobhan Hunter, Kelly Clark, Kathryn Hill, Kirsty Smith, Caroline Weir, Carolina Richardson (sub Ashley Fish 90mins), Heather Richards, Abbi Grant. Subs not used: Megan Cunningham, Cara McBrearty, Kirstin McGuire, Natasha McMahon, Stephanie Briggs, Shelby Kearney.
