Holders win local derby tie
 Women's Football News 29 Oct 2012
Holders win local derby tie - 29 Oct 2012 - Women's Football NewsFAW Women's Cup holders Cardiff City Ladies signalled their intentions in this year's competition with a convincing 6-0 victory over closest rivals Cardiff City FC.
Cardiff City Ladies, who play in the FA Women's Premier League, were too strong all over the field for their Welsh Premier League opponents, in what was a good advert for the women's game, despite the one-sided scoreline.
Cardiff City Ladies were ahead inside ten minutes when a goal-bound Kayleigh Green corner was helped in by keeper Alice Evans. It was 2-0 to Cardiff City Ladies before the half hour when an outstanding byline cross from Eleanor Issac was headed in at the far post by Ellie Smith.
Danielle Broadhurst had a chance to pull one back moments later but Wales keeper Rhian Nokes saved well and that proved even more costly when International defender Nia Jones struck an incredible goal from 40 metres, lobbing Alice Evans to make it 3-0 at the break.
The second half was a similar story as Jamie Sherwood's team continued to dominate and it was at another set piece where they scored the fourth goal with Nicola Cousins heading in unopposed. The fifth followed soon as the rain hammered down in Leckwith with Kelly Aldridge tapping in from another corner.
The sixth was a fine solo effort from Paige Stewart who beat two opponents before picking her spot in the bottom corner to become the sixth different scorer for the hosts.
The Welsh Premier Women's League outfit didn't give up and Catherine Walsh had a great last chance but she was denied by the reliable Nokes who was in fine form for her side, who progress to the last eight.
Cardiff Met Ladies were beaten finalists last season and they enjoyed a comfortable passage into the Quarter-Finals this year with a 5-0 win over fellow Welsh Premier outfit Newcastle Emlyn in Cyncoed. The 2011 Champions Swansea City also progressed with ease by the same score over West Wales Women's League side Camrose.
Another Welsh Premier League side to progress to the quarter finals are Wrexham who enjoyed a 6-0 win at North Wales Women's League team Prestatyn.
The match between Caernarfon Town and Llanidloes was postponed and will be played next Sunday.
The game of the day was at Aberystwyth Town where the home side were given a scare before progressing with a 4-3 victory over Denbigh Town.
A frantic start to the game saw Aber race into a two-goal lead inside the opening quarter hour, Mel Davies putting them ahead and Ffiona Evans adding the second through a powerful 20-yard strike. Denbigh reacted quickly to the double setback and brought themselves back into the game when Mary Edwards pulled a goal back and the North Wales Women's League side levelled matters just after the half hour through Llio Hafal.
With the game being played in torrential rain, Aber went back in front via a header from Kelly Thomas but Denbigh once again hit back, Edwards firing home her second goal to end a pulsating first half with the scores level at 3-3.
The pattern of the game continued in the second half with both sides attacking whenever possible and chances coming at either end of the pitch in worsening conditions. Midway through the half, Aber scored what turned out to be a decisive goal when Sam Gaunt netted from the penalty spot but they needed to hang on in the late stages for a very hard earned victory.
