Us Girls Rocks festival a success
 Women's Football News 1 Nov 2012
Us Girls Rocks festival a success - 1 Nov 2012 - Women's Football NewsThe first North East Us Girls Rocks Festival which took place on Tuesday at Middlesbrough FC in the Community was hailed a huge success by organisers.
The event which featured the FA Girls' Football Festival along with a wide range of free sporting activities was aimed at encouraging young women aged 14 to 25 to get active and have some fun.
Young women from across the North East were invited to take part in Us Girls Rocks Festival which incorporated a range of sports such as judo, volleyball, netball, football, touch rugby and table tennis, streetdance and streetcheer. As a reward for taking part in the activities participants were entered into a free prize draw for Ipod Shuffles and New Look gift cards.
Around 100 girls, most of them taking part in sport for the first time, also participated in the FA's Girls' Football Festival which included a free programme led by FA coaches aimed at encouraging girls to get involved in the game. They were accompanied by Rachel Brown, Team GB, England and Everton football star, who gave the girls an insight into the life of a semi-professional female footballer.
Rachel Brown said: "It was great to see so many young women getting involved and having a taste of different sports. The aim is not to get them to be the elite but to encourage participation. When I was younger I didn't have role models in my sport so I wanted to show them that we are very accessible and encourage them to get involved."
The event which was run by StreetGames and Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community, Newcastle City Council and The FA as part of the National Us Girls programme, had a fun and friendly atmosphere with music, free T-shirts, and prize give-ways.
Helen Crowley from Us Girls said: "It was an amazing day, the turnout was fantastic. I saw a lot of young women playing sport with big smiles on their faces, which is exactly what Us Girls is about."
Although it is the final FA Girls' Football Festival, supported by Continental Tyres, Sport England and UEFA of the season, Us Girls Rocks Festival travels to London on Thursday 1 November with special guest Olympic gold medallist Nicola Adams. The Festival takes place at Hammersmith and West London College, Hammersmith Campus, London on Thursday 1 November from 2pm-8pm.
